[edit]After the common ending of its constituent towns, Southampton, East Hampton, etc. Southampton was the first to be named, possibly in honor of Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, or alternatively because many of its inhabitants originated from Southampton, England.[1][2]
