Halbzeit
Appearance
German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From halb (“half”) + Zeit (“time”), after English half-time.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]Halbzeit f (genitive Halbzeit, plural Halbzeiten)
- (sports) half (one of two equally long periods of a match)
- Synonyms: Hälfte, Spielhälfte, Spielabschnitt
- (sports) half time (the interval between these periods)
- Synonyms: Pause, Halbzeitpause
Usage notes
[edit]- The two senses are rarely confusable because there are two halves and only one half-time. So the latter is simply die Halbzeit, while the former sense will occur as eine Halbzeit (“one half”), diese Halbzeit (“this half”), die zweite Halbzeit (“the second half”), and so on.
