Old Norse
[edit]Etymology
[edit]The first part is Old Norse gunnr (“battle”), from Proto-Germanic *gunþiz. The second part is vǫr. Probably derived from the Old Norse adjective varr (“careful, wise, loyal”), cognate to the Gothic adjective 𐍅𐌰𐍂 (war, “cautious”). Alternatively, vǫr is cognate to Proto-Germanic *wari- (“warrior”).
