Usage notes

[edit]

Grundarfjarðarkaupstaður — although having the technical meaning of “municipality of Grundarfjörður” in modern Icelandic — is used nearly exclusively to refer to the sanctioned market settlement which existed from 1786-1807 and again from 1816-1836. The modern municipality is Grundarfjarðarbær (despite its name meaning “city of Grundarfjörður” in modern Icelandic).
