Etymology

First attested as mydhusum in 1491. Calque of West Frisian Grut Midhuzen, derived from grut (great, big) and a compound of Old Frisian mid (mid-, middle) and the plural form of hūs (house). The element groot was added to distinguish the settlement from Klein Medhuizen.
