[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as marisfliete in 944. Derived from groot (“great, big”) and a compound of Old Frisian mar (“lake, pool, watercourse”) and fliet (“tidal watercourse, river”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to Dutch Low Saxon slacht (“levee”). The element groot was added to distinguish the settlement from Klein Maarslag.
