Etymology

First attested as de maatschappij Griendtsveen in 1887. Compound of van de Griendt (a surname) and veen (peat bog, marsh). Named after Joannes van de Griendt (1804-1884), an investor who developed the lands around Griendtsveen and Helenaveen.
