[edit]Potentially attested as gottincheim around 825-842, attested with certainty as Gôtum in 1718. Borrowed from West Frisian Goattum, derived in turn from Old Frisian Gote (a personal name) or Gottinge (a surname) and hēm (“home, settlement”).
