Compound of the name of the toponym Gommerkarspel and wijk (neighbourhood, quarter). The name references Gommerkarspel (a compound of the name of Saint Gummarus of Lier and Middle Dutch kercspel (parish, village with a church)), a village which was fused with Enkhuizen in 1356.
