Etymology

First attested as godebrechteswijc around 1200. Derived from Middle Dutch Godebrecht (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi-. The suffixed variant eventually replaced an only slightly older compound formed with Middle Dutch wijc (farmstead, settlement, village). Compare Everdingen and Helsdingen.
