[edit]First attested as gnepwich in 1233. Potentially a compound of a term cognate to Old English genip (“fog, mist”) or Old Norse gnípa (“leaning rock-face”) and hoek (“corner, sharp bend”). The second element was initially Middle Dutch wyc (“farmstead, village, settlement”).
