Etymology

[edit]

Probably related to gjeva (give). The last part is vatn (water, lake). Known in old Danicized forms as Gevilvandet or Djevilvandet. The last one may be explained as example of folk etymology, which connects lake's name to devil (Norwegian Nynorsk djevel), what is also the reason behind the humorous sense of the word.
