Etymology
[edit]First attested as gilisa in 1012-1018. Perhaps derived from an ancient hydronym related to Old Norse gil (“gap, ravine”). An alternative hypothesis proposes a compound derived from Old Dutch *gîsil (“twig, branch”) and lo (“light forest”), but this proposed etymology does not match well with the oldest attestations.
