Etymology

From the plural of Middle High German gezīt (particular time, such as a feast or prayer time), from Old High German gizit (passage of time), from gi- + zit (from Proto-Germanic *tīdiz (time)). The modern sense is loaned from cognate Middle Low German getīde, whence also Tide. Related to Zeit.
