[edit]Potentially attested as gamerthe between 1076-1081, attested with certainty as gemerde in 1172. Potentially derived from a collectivised noun Proto-Germanic *mari- (“lake, cut-off riverbend”) prefixed with the collectivising prefix *ga-. Compare Gemonde.
