[edit]From Middle High German gelehter, a collective form of Middle High German lahter, from Old High German lahtar, hlahtar (8th century), from Proto-Germanic *hlahtraz (“laughter”). Cognate with Old English hleahtor (whence English laughter) and Danish latter.
