[edit]Hunters' jargon for "mouth, feed" (1st half of the 18th century), from Middle High German geæʒe (“fodder, esp. bird feed”) (14th century), from Middle High German æʒen, a derivation of āʒ (“eating, animal feed”). By surface analysis, ge- + äsen (“to graze, browse, said of deer”). Cognate with German Äsung (“feed, nourishment”) (mid 16th century), Äser (“mouth”).
