[edit]Etymology
[edit]Attested as Gaesperdam in 1639. Compound of the hydronym Gaasp and dam (“dam”). The hydronym is likely a compound of Proto-Germanic *geuzan (“flow powerfully”) and Old Dutch *apa (“river, watercourse”). Compare Gesperden, Hagestein and Gaasbeek. Formerly an independent hamlet.
