[edit]From Middle English Fulewde, from Old English fūl (“dirty, foul”), definite form fūla + wudu (“wood”), 'the dirty wood'. The first element could possibly otherwise come from fugol (“bird, fowl”), thus 'wood where fowling takes place'.
