[edit]Etymology
[edit]Semi-learned borrowing from Old Norse Friðþjófr, equivalent to fred + tjov. Revived through 19th century literature, but commonly reanalysed as Fridt-jov rather than Frid-tjov, resulting in a pronunciation unexpected of such a compound. Cognate with Icelandic Friðþjófur, Swedish Fritiof and Danish Frithjof.
Pronunciation
[edit]- (from the variant Fridtjof) IPA(key): /ˈfrit.jof/, /ˈfrit.ti.of/
- (expected, but unattested) IPA(key): /²frɪː.çuːv/, [²frɪː.çu̞ˑʋ], [²frɪː.c͡çu̞ˑʋ]
- Hyphenation: fridt‧jov, frid‧tjov
