Etymology

[edit]

First attested as vortmen in 1227. Etymology uncertain. A proposed derivation from a compound of voorde (ford, crossing) and man (man, inhabitant) is unlikely in light of comparisons with similar toponyms. Compare Bathmen, Berkum, Besthmen, Diermen, Giethmen, Helpman, Hertme, Ratum, Reutum, Thamen, Wachtum and Wijthmen.
