[edit]From Old Norse Finnmǫrk (“land of the Sami”), from finnr, fiðr (“Sami”) + mǫrk (“woodland, forest”). First part from Proto-Germanic *fenþnōz pl (“nomadic people”) or *finnaz.
Not to be confused with Finnemarka, which is a newer name made from finne (“Finn”), a Swedish borrowing.
