From Old Norse Finnmǫrk (Finnmark), first part from finn, finnar (Sami person). Last part mǫrk (forest, woodland, borderland), from Proto-Germanic *markō (border, boundary, area), from Proto-Indo-European *morǵ- (edge, boundary, border).

From Old Norse Finnmǫrk (land of the Sami), from finnr, fiðr (Sami) + mǫrk (woodland, forest). First part from Proto-Germanic *fenþnōz pl (nomadic people) or *finnaz.

Not to be confused with Finnemarka, which is a newer name made from finne (Finn), a Swedish borrowing.
