Italianization of the Sicilian surname Sicilian Firritu, from Ferra (Ferla) +‎ -itu (inhabitational suffix), from Ferula the first element, while the second is from the reminiscence of Latin -ītēs, ultimately from Ancient Greek -ῑ́της (-ī́tēs). Doublet of ferlese.
