[edit]First attested as federwrt and federfurt around 820. Derived from a compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian wrt (“terp, artificial mound used for habitation”). The first element may be Old Frisian Feder (a personal name). Compare Ferwerd and Fedderwarden.
