Swedish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From the definite of förintelse (“destruction, annihilation”). Literally the destruction ("of Jews" is implied).
Cognate of German Vernichtung, a word used in Hitler's prophecy from the 30 January 1939 Reichstag speech. In 1963 the first Swedish translation of the book The Destruction of the European Jews was given the title Hur de europeiska judarna förintades. The word was then chosen as the Swedish title when the U.S. miniseries Holocaust was broadcast in 1979, after which the name stuck.[1]
Proper noun
[edit]Förintelsen c (genitive Förintelsens)
- The Holocaust (the mass murder of Jews and other groups by the Nazi regime during World War II)
