[edit]From Middle High German vegeviur, a calque of Ecclesiastical Latin īgnis pūrgātōrius or īgnis pūrgātiōnis (“cleansing fire”). Analysable as fëge (“to polish, clean”) + Füür (“fire”). Cognate with German Fegefeuer.
