[edit]From Middle High German fūlnis, vūlnis, fūlnisse, vūlnisse, from Old High German fūlnussī, from Proto-West Germanic *fūlnassī. Equivalent to Faul + -nis. Compare English foulness and Dutch vuilnis (“rubbish; garbage; trash”).
