Etymology

From Middle High German fūlnis, vūlnis, fūlnisse, vūlnisse, from Old High German fūlnussī, from Proto-West Germanic *fūlnassī. Equivalent to Faul +‎ -nis. Compare English foulness and Dutch vuilnis (rubbish; garbage; trash).
