[edit]From Old Norse eyrr + sund. Known from a runic inscription in a dative case form written as Old Norse ᚢᚱᛅ ᛋᚢᛏᛁ (ura suti, “in the gravel bank sound”). Akin to Faroese Oyrasund, Norwegian Nynorsk Øyresund, Danish Øresund, and Swedish Öresund.
