English
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unadapted borrowing from Esperanto Esperantujo (from Esperanto + -ujo (“country”)).
Proper noun
[edit]Esperantujo
- A notional land of Esperanto speakers.
- The entire community of Esperantists (Esperanto speakers)
Usage notes
[edit]When Esperantists talk about the state of things 'in Esperantujo' (or Esperantio), they mean in places where Esperantists gather. Esperanto conferences and Internet forums are imagined to be part of this abstract Esperantoland. In practice the word is often used to mean 'the Esperanto community,' although Esperanto speakers also commonly say they 'go on vacation in Esperantujo,' i.e. visit an Esperanto gathering.
It is comparable to the land of Lojbanistan to Lojbanists.
