[edit]From the genitive of Ermesindus or Ermesinda,[1] from a Suevic and/or Gothic compound personal name, from Proto-Germanic *ermunaz (“strong, whole; Irmin”) + *sinþaz (“journey; companion”) or *swinþaz (“strong”).[2]
