[edit]From Old Norse Eldjárn, composed from eldr (“fire”) (Icelandic eldur) and járn (“iron”) (Icelandic járn). The family name transferred from the given name and is used by the descendants of Kristján Eldjárn Þórarinsson (1843-1917).
