Newer combination of eld (fire) +‎ bjørg (salvation, help). Cognate with Faroese Eldbjørg, and Icelandic and Swedish Eldbjörg.

Also a dialectal (Halvemål) variant of Hallbjørg, from Old Norse Hallbjǫrg, from hallr (stone) +‎ bjǫrg (salvation).
