- Perhaps the most blatant sign of Germany’s style of warfare in 1941 was the use of special murder squads. German authorities dispatched mobile killing units to follow the regular military into Soviet territory. The main units, known as the Einsatzgruppen, “special action groups,” included between five hundred and one thousand men each, many of them well educated,—lawyers, theologians, and other professionals.
