First attested as in die Douff, auss der Douffen in 1611. Derived from a compound of the toponyms Douve and Genhout. Douve is potentially the name of a house derived from duif (“pigeon”), while Genhout is a compound of the definite article ge and hout (“rising deciduous forest”).
