Etymology

First attested as nye delfsterhuisen and olde delfsterhuisen in 1408. Borrowed from a compound of West Frisian delf (dug watercourse) and the plural form of hûs (house). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
