[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as uuemminge in 918-948. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from Old Frisian Wemme (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ingi- or from a term meaning "poor soil". The toponym was gradually reinterpreted to westen (“west”).
