Etymology

[edit]

From Bengali ধানি (dhani, relating to paddy).

Proper noun

[edit]

Danio m

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Cyprinidae – the danios or danionins, small tropical fish often used in aquariums.

Usage notes

[edit]

Danio was described in 1822 by Francis Hamilton. In 1916, the genus was split, with the smaller species being moved into the genus Brachydanio. In 1991, the two genera were recombined, and most larger species formerly within Danio have now been reclassified into Devario. Brachydanio is now a junior synonym of Danio.
