Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Dragoș Moldovanu derives it from the Polish personal name Kobolt, itself from German Kobold. N. Raevski proposes an Iranic origin, comparing the toponym Къумбултӕ (K’umbultæ) from North Ossetia, although this etymology is rejected by Moldovanu.
