[edit]Two possible origins:
- English habitational surname from a minor place in Suffolk, from Old English cropp (“swelling, mound”) + lēah (“woodland clearing, glade”). Equivalent to crop + -ley (“lea”).
- Americanized spelling of Swiss German Kroppli, a variant of Kropf.
