[edit]Attested as Custodia since 945 in local Medieval Latin documents. Together with Custoia and Costoira, from Latin custōdia (“protection, custody”), in probable reference to the ancient presence of watchtowers or guard posts. Cognate with Portuguese Custóias and Catalan Costoja.
