Etymology

The name of the city on Prince Edward Island is Charlotte +‎ town. The city is named after Queen Charlotte (1744-1818). The town in Labrador was named after the city on Prince Edward Island by the local resident Benjamin Powell, who had hoped that the settlement might one day reach a similar size and importance.
