Etymology

Slavic oikonym suffixed with -ăuți m sg (where Proto-Slavic *-ovьci, *-òvьci, or *-ovьcì m pl), which was used to form eponymic demonyms.

Borrowed from Old East Slavic *Чьрновьцꙑ m pl (*Čĭrnovĭcy), from Чьрнь (Čĭrnĭ) +‎ -овьцꙑ m pl (-ovĭcy). Compare Ukrainian Чернівці́ m pl (Černivcí); also Polish Czerniowce m pl, German Czernowitz m sg, Yiddish טשערנאָוויץ m sg (tshernovits), Hungarian Csernovic sg, etc.
