[edit]First attested in Ptolemy's Geographia. Derived from Greek Καττίγαρα (Kattígara), from Sanskrit कीर्ति- नगर (kīrti- nagara, “Renowned City”) or Sanskrit कोटि-नगर (koṭi-nagara, “Strong City”).
