How do I fix this category?

Hi @Benwing2, I just created Bulgarian вежливост (vežlivost) using the accelerated entry creator, after adding accel support for deadjectival abstract nouns in Module:bg-headword. The entry was automatically categorized under this category, which I assume is the doing of {{abstract noun of}}. The RFD thread for that template seems to indicate it was originally only used for Thai, but I'm not sure why we wouldn't use it for Bulgarian. Also, Module:accel has special handling for "abstract noun" which does end up invoking this template.

I'd agree that "<Language> abstract nouns" is probably not a great name, because the linguistic term covers more than just e.g. nouns created from adjectives to express -ness. Maybe "<Language> abstract nouns from <pos>"? Not sure what the right path forward is.

@Chernorizets By "fix the category" do you mean you want {{auto cat}} support or you want a better name? For the latter, maybe "Bulgarian deadjectival nouns" or possibly "Bulgarian deadjectival abstract nouns"? Compare for example Category:Italian deverbals, which is generated by {{it-deverbal}} and {{deverbal}}. (The reason for the language-specific version {{it-deverbal}} is that avoids the need to write e.g. {{deverbal|it|intagliare|-o<pos:deverbal>}} for intaglio; instead you just write {{it-deverbal|intagliare}}. This functionality was originally requested by User:Catonif.) All or almost all of the terms in Category:Italian deverbals are nouns, so it doesn't seem necessary to explicitly state that they are nouns. OTOH maybe it isn't necessary to categorize deadjectival abstract nouns separately from other types of abstract nouns; dunno. As for adding {{auto cat}} support, you'd edit something like Module:category tree/poscatboiler/data/lemmas and add the appropriate entry using the existing entries as guides. Note that if you go that page or any of the poscatboiler module pages, there's a search box that lets you search through the poscatboiler data modules for existing categories. If you search for "abstract" you can see that there's already an entry for 'abstract verbs' as well as a couple of language-specific entries for 'abstract nouns' (for Thai and Lao); we should make 'abstract nouns' non-language-specific and remove the corresponding Thai and Lao entries. @Benwing2 my intent was to make it easier to create Bulgarian de-adjectival nouns via acceleration tags. As part of that, I discovered that Module:accel has special handling for the "abstract noun" form, which includes categorizing such nouns under "<Language> abstract nouns". So to me, the question of whether we keep this category as "Bulgarian abstract nouns" is really a question of whether we keep {{abstract noun of}} and the special-case logic in Module:accel. If we want to keep them, then the category name is simply a consequence of those choices.

It could be that {{abstract noun of}} needs a |POS= parameter like {{diminutive of}}, so that it can create a category like "Bulgarian abstract nouns from adjectives" if invoked with POS=adj. Module:accel does look at |POS= when handling diminutives and augmentatives.

I suppose I could go the route of custom templates and custom categories, but I feel as if there's an opportunity to do something generally useful here. E.g. Proto-Slavic *-ostь is inherited by pretty much all Slavic languages to make abstract nouns from adjectives. Chernorizets (talk) 05:54, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
