Proto-West Germanic ja-stem nouns.
These nouns are masculine or neuter, typically with the following endings:
- in the nominative singular: -ī after a heavy root, -i after a light root;
- in the genitive singular: -ijas after a heavy root, -jas with West Germanic gemination after a light root;
- in the nominative plural: when masculine, -ijō or -ijōs after a heavy root, -jō or -jōs with West Germanic gemination after a light root; when neuter, -iju after a heavy root, -ju with West Germanic gemination after a light root.
The stem classes are named from the perspective of Proto-Germanic and may not still be visible in Proto-West Germanic inflections. In Proto-Germanic, the endings were the same as that of the a-stems, but later sound changes caused the two classes to diverge.
