Old Norse metaphorical compounds or phrases describing basic objects in an allusive fashion, used especially in Germanic poetry.
Kennings are poetic circumlocutions (such as "the tumult of axes" for battle, "war-leek" for sword). Contrast with heiti, poetic synonyms (such as wood as a synonym for forest).
