[edit]Etymology
[edit]Several theories exist about the origin of the names of the islets:
- The islets are shaped roughly like a caravel;
- The islets were mistaken for a hostile caravel by sailors and were entered as such on early maps;
- A vessel mistook the islet(s) for a hostile caravel and opened fire on it;
- The islets were used as a target for artillery practice and/or a way to unload ammunition before travelling to demilitarised islands.
