German

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Dutch broek (swamp, meadow) + huizen (home). The name combines two of the specifically Dutch spellings found only in the area between Krefeld and Kleve, namely -oe- for /uː/ and -uy- for /yː/ (cf. Boeckelt and Schaephuysen respectively). Elsewhere in North-Rhine Westphalia -oe- represents /oː/ or /øː/ and we find -ui- for /yː/.
