English
[edit]Proper noun
[edit]Bremerhaven
- A city and seaport in Bremen, Germany.
- 2020, Emily St. John Mandel, The Glass Hotel, Picador (2021), page 254:
- A black car […] ferried them north under low grey skies, through the pretty red-brick districts of Bremerhaven proper to the place that everyone in the shipping industry was actually talking about when they said the name of that city: a massive terminal between the city and the sea, not quite in Germany but not quite anywhere else, one of those liminal spaces that have proliferated on this earth.
German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Bremer (“of Bremen”) + Hafen (“harbour”). The Low German spelling Haven was already archaic when the harbour was opened around 1830. It was probably chosen by analogy with Cuxhaven. Compare Wilhelmshaven (founded in 1869).
