• (Gelderland) First attested as brakel in 1212. Compound of Proto-Germanic *brakô- (“twig, branch, undergrowth”) and lo (“light forest”).
• (Noord-Brabant) First attested as ten breekelen in 1422. Presumably derived from a suffixed form of braak (“intensively ploughed land, heath converted to farmland”). Compare the toponym in Gelderland.
